The HSE guidance on healthcare waste covers the management of clinical and other healthcare waste. It does not make chemicals or specialist waste suitable for disposal through an off-mains sewage system.

Where a site uses a sewage treatment plant, sludge removal does not replace checks on pumps, blowers, controls or alarms. High levels or backing-up that return after emptying need investigation of the connected pipework, inflow and discharge arrangement.

Does treatment-plant emptying include servicing its equipment?
Not automatically. Sludge removal and mechanical servicing are separate tasks unless both are included.
What if essential toilets start backing up after a recent empty?
The cause needs investigating. A blocked inlet, unwanted inflow or a downstream fault can remain after sludge has been removed.
