The sludge blanket occupies space needed for settlement. As it builds, incoming wastewater has less effective time and volume in which to separate, increasing the risk of solids reaching the outlet. Tank size alone does not set the emptying interval: occupancy, use and the manufacturer’s maintenance procedure also matter.

We recommend intervals from the actual installation and its emptying history. More occupants, persistent leaking taps or rainwater connected to the foul system can increase loading. If performance has changed, we investigate the reason rather than simply repeating the previous year’s visit.
Signs that need investigation
An unusually wet area near the discharge field or drains that slow after rainfall deserves attention even if the last empty was recent. Keeping covers safely accessible also makes maintenance easier. Do not enter the tank to investigate: hazardous gases and oxygen deficiency can be present without a reliable warning to someone looking through the opening.

Can additives replace emptying?
Additives do not remove the need for sludge collection and the manufacturer's maintenance procedure.
Does a tank need attention only when it overflows?
Maintenance should control sludge before an overflow occurs. Waiting for sewage outside can allow damage to the drainage field.
Can rainwater connected to the tank affect it?
Rainwater adds hydraulic load and can reduce the capacity available for sewage. An incorrect connection needs investigation.
Does maintenance include repairing every defect found?
